Exhibition from October 22, 2017 to January 14, 2018
Tobias Dostal is the 6th recipient of the Horst Janssen Prize for Graphic Arts, whose work will be presented this year by the Horst-Janssen Museum in partnership with the Claus Hüppe Foundation. The 34-year-old artist from Berlin initially impressed the jury with his drawings. But Dostal also creates moving images and filmic illusions through his drawings. He animates the transformation of humans, animals and objects in a highly unusual manner, projecting these animations using devices he designed himself. Drawing, film and installation form a striking union in Dostal’s works – which are both technically ingenious and poetic.
The artist is particularly interested in analog approaches to art, through which the observer can understand how images are made and how a visual effect is achieved. Dostal gives his artwork a magical quality via the staging of light and shadow, as well as placement of devices and equipment. Thus the acts of seeing and of presentation become the topics at hand.
Tobias Dostal is developing new works for his exhibition in Oldenburg. One of them will be available for purchase in the museum shop in a limited edition. The exhibition catalogue is available for 19 euros.
